We are often asked why the Icarus vs.  Criss Angels?

Here is a letter I recently received from Aaron;
 
As promised, the following is the email I send out if people ask about the difference between my Levitation and Criss Angel's ( Jacob Spinney's).  
 
Although the 2 levitations (Icarus and Jacobs) might at first seem similar, there are some significant differences.  I offer you the following comparison, taken from a public magic forum, please read it and take from it what you will.  Also keep in mind; some of the best magicians in the world have chosen to go with Icarus Effect (for a good reason).  I believe, in the end, you will deem Icarus to be the most practical, better value, more sensible levitation as well.

 As for having to hide modifications to your clothing; there is really nothing to see, unless the audience knows what to look for, and if the audience knows what to look for, then chances are they own Icarus Effect (catch my drift), so, there is really nothing to worry about.  I commonly wear the gimmick around all day and no one has ever seen anything (I have been performing Icarus for years).
 
Comparison
 
While the two levitations seem to be based upon similar concepts, there appear to be substantial differences, both in the marketed items offered, their appearance and performance, and their practicality.

Icarus Effect; was invented by Aaron Paterson in early 1994, and he has kept if for his own performance use, showing it to only a few close Magician friends, until he released it for sale exclusively to the Magic community several months ago.

In Aaron's levitation, you float facing the audience! Big Difference as you stay in compliance with one of the most basic rules of good theatre, that is to never have your back to the audience.  This is an advantage for "spectator management", knowing where the spectators are standing, looking, etc.

You can float upwards onto a step or curb or chair, pause, and then float back down again, and then immediately walk away. There is no clean up at the end. There is also no prep or set-up once you are wearing the gimmick. You are ready to levitate at any time, anywhere.

As with most levitations, there are angle restrictions. This was conceived as a one-on-one levitation, but can be done for up to 3 or 4 people if you watch your angles carefully. You can also perform a remarkable levitation on flat ground, with a step. There is a stage idea on the DVD (that is worth the price of Icarus) where angles are not a concern, and this could be performed for a large audience.  Lot's of creative possibilities here and oh so practical.

In Aaron's marketed effect, you receive the DVD explaining the assembly and use of the gimmick, as well as tips and ideas not shown on the demo video, for use on stage and the street. With the kit, Aaron includes ALL the necessary materials and tools to assemble this effect and customize it to your body and your clothing.  Including the "space age material" (a very difficult to find material, that possesses some amazing properties!) that makes the preparation of your gimmick a breeze. You supply the clothes. Aaron has developed his idea carefully over the past ten years, searching out the perfect materials of the best quality, which, as I mentioned, are included in the kit. This effect is amazingly practical, and the gimmick can be worn comfortably all day, if you choose to do so.

The levitation that Criss Angel performed on his television show, where he floats onto a chair, seems to be the one that he is marketing on DVD.  Any information one can gather is purely from his demo on his television show, and from Angel's own ads for this item. This levitation is the creation of a magician named Jacob Spinney (sp?), who sold it to Angel for his television show. Angel is marketing the Spinney idea through magic dealers, but also through his website, where it appears that it will be available to the general public.  (Not Good.)

In his performance, Angel levitates up onto a chair, with his back to the audience. It does not show him coming down from the chair, as the camera cuts immediately after he rises up onto the chair. Similarly, later in the video, he floats up onto a concrete barrier, but again, the camera cuts away as soon as he floats up, and we don't see if he is able to walk away without adjustment, or whether he is able to float down. I also suspect the video is a little misleading in that there are spectators seated at side angles to the performance. These people surely would be exposed to the working method of this levitation.

From Angel's ads, it appears that his marketed item will consist solely of a DVD explaining the workings and construction of Spinney's concept, along with performance ideas and clips from Angel's television shows. No materials or tools are included, nor will they be available from his website, according to Angel's own ads. It seems that you must hunt those down yourself.

I suggest you compare the videos, ask those who have bought and reviewed the Icarus Effect, and read through all these posts, and then you will see for yourself that Icarus is the one that meets your needs best as a performer.
